Witness the world’s best surfers at the Margaret River Pro

11-22 April at Surfers Point, Prevelly Margaret River

The WSL returns to Margaret River, possibly for the last time (but we hope not).

Take the kids to watch some incredible surfers battle it out. You’ll see John John Florence, Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina, Joel Parkinson, Tyler Wright, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and newly named ‘WSL rookie of the year’ Bronte Macaulay.

Book a Family Surfing Lesson

If the kids are confident swimmers and keen to give it a go, book them a surfing lesson. Not many people can say they’ve surfed in Margaret River, so why not burn off some energy in the waves.

Josh Palmateer’s Surf Academy at River Mouth in Prevelly is great, as are Margaret River Surf School at Redgate.

Alternatively, try Stand Up Paddle Boarding – also loads of fun, but doesn’t require such coordination and skill! Tip: bigger board = better buoyancy.

Go deep underground in a Limestone Cave

We’re famous for our awesome caves – there’s meant to be over 150 caves in the Cape to Cape region. Four incredible caves are open for you to explore – and we recommend Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave as they’re closer.

Both are spectacular. In Mammoth Cave you are given an audio guide headset, so you can walk through at your own pace. The first chamber is wheel chair accessible, but you exit the cave through a doline (sink hole) so there’s stairs on the way out, plus you cross a road. Lake Cave is a guided tour with lots of stairs, definitely manageable and very beautiful.

Megafauna Funshops at Mammoth Cave Margaret River

Dig for Fossils at a Megafauna Funshop

We’ve just booked tickets for the first time – it’s $15 per person for adults or kids and is recommended for children aged 5-10 years. The Megafauna Funshop starts at Lake Cave theatrette, with a presentation and hands on fossil dig. You can learn all about the megafauna, these giant animals which lived throughout the Margaret River region and across Australia up until 40,000 years ago.

You then drive to Mammoth Cave (5 minutes away), where the fun continues with a fully guided tour, and apparently you can see some of the bones still lodged in the cave wall.

Learn about the formation of Mammoth Cave and marvel at the speleothems which decorate the walls and ceiling.

Available only at 9am on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school holidays. Ideally suited for ages 5 – 10 yrs. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family friendly breweries – Cheeky Monkey and Colonial Brewing Company

There’s about 10 awesome craft breweries in the cape to cape region, most are family friendly. Two of our favourites are Cheeky Monkey and Colonial Brewing Company.

Cheeky Monkey makes fresh beer and cider onsite, and a sizeable fenced playground. Just what you need if you’re visiting with little kids; you know they’re safe even if you glance away for a few minutes. Beer is top notch, as is the food and the Killerby Wines.

We recently went for a spin with Jackson at Scenic Helicopters; he’s based at Cheeky Monkey once a week (usually a Saturday but sometimes a Sunday) until the end of April, then he’ll be back in October. Scenic flights start at $85 per person and it’s an exhilarating way to check out the coastline and vineyards.

Colonial Brewing Company is the other go-to for families. Set a few minutes east of Cowaramup amongst lush green pastures, it’s really popular with locals and makes some of our favourite pizzas.

Outside there’s a big playground (unfenced) and plenty of space to run around. You can choose a table nearby with a playground view to keep an eye on the kids while you relax.Indoors they have a kids corner with toys, books, colouring in paper and pencils.

Amazing Mazes – Yallingup Maze and A Maze'n Margaret River Maze

Two mazes in the region – can you believe it?

A Maze’n Margaret River is just a few minutes’ drive from Stay Margaret River, and it’s our choice when the weather is fine. You can take a picnic or BBQ, explore their wonderful hedge maze then relax and enjoy the extensive garden and free BBQ facilities. There’s a café too, with delicious home cooked burgers and other meals.

It’s easy to spend half a day here, just quietly relaxing and looking around. The owners built the hedge maze over 25 years ago – they were living in a remote mining town at the time and created the maze in the hope it would allow them to eventually leave the landlocked town and move to Margaret River. It worked – now they live in this magnificent part of the world, sharing their garden and maze with visitors from all over the world.

Yallingup Maze is similar but different. It’s a wooden maze, playground and bouncy castle, and it’s where we go when it’s drizzly and wet thanks to their huge indoor space. There’s loads of free puzzles to play with, and a café with good coffee, so plenty to keep the family entertained. They often have school holiday activities too – look up Yallingup Maze on facebook to see what’s on.

Busselton Jetty for kids

Busselton Jetty and Underwater Observatory

Photo: Anna Terlick

This historic jetty is the pride of Busselton. It’s just passed 40 years since Cyclone Alby destroyed a big chunk of the jetty, and several fires over the years have ruined sections too, but each time the local community has rallied to gather funds to have it repaired.

Originally built 151 years ago to allow boats to collect timber (timber milling was a huge industry in the south west) the jetty is now a vibrant attraction plus a local’s fishing and swimming spot.

Entry is about $4 per person, but free after 6pm, and that allows you to walk along the longest timber pile jetty in the world (it’s 1.81km). There’s a red electric train and an underwater observatory at the end of the jetty (about $90 for a family pass) which is great when the water is clear. You can see an array of beautiful fish swimming around the coral that grows on the timber piles. Coral, this far south? Yes, Geographe Bay seems to have an unusually warm spot, warm enough that coral has grown, creating an ecosystem under the jetty. They’ve also seen starfish and on rare occasion a seal.

This is a great one for the drive home to Perth, as Busselton is about a 35-minute drive north of Margaret River.
